Dan Duquette Sports Academy Baseball Schedule Announced
Grand Opening Event – Father & Son Weekend
Hinsdale, MA – September 10, 2002 – Scheduled to open next summer the Sports Academy will offer boys 8-18 the opportunity to experience a big league sports training experience in a majestic Berkshire Mountains setting. Construction of all new facilities including four baseball fields has been taking place over this past year. The one hundred acre facility is located minutes from Pittsfield, MA.
The inaugural schedule includes seven, six-day sessions running from mid June to mid August. The Academy will celebrate its official grand opening with a father & son weekend event over the Memorial Day holiday.
“The response so far from parents and children inquiring about the Academy has been outstanding,” Duquette said. “I’ve also been delighted by how many Major League players and staff have contacted me requesting to attend and participate in our programs.”
Current plans for the Sports Academy include the construction of Little League, Pony League, and Major League baseball fields, basketball facilities, dormitories, a medical center, a technology center, and a Major League styled clubhouse and conference center.
“I’ve had the privilege of spending more than twenty years working in Major League Baseball. I’m excited by the opportunity to build this facility and hopeful for the positive impact the experience may have on some young man’s dreams.”

By Anonymous Menlo Park, CA - The Golden Baseball League today announced its plans to start a new independent baseball league for the 2005 season in California and western Arizona.
"We are excited about bringing professional baseball back to communities across California and western Arizona," said League Founder, David Kaval. "It is our vision to give every child in California the chance to grow up watching professional baseball."
Kaval, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, is a Silicon Valley businessman with a passion for baseball. He co-authored a book, "The Summer that Saved Baseball" about his trip to visit all 30 major league ballparks in a mere 38 days.
The League will start with six teams playing a 90 game season at the single-A level. Over time the League will expand to ten to twelve teams.
"California is a great market for minor league baseball. The weather, the availability of talent, and the history of baseball make it a natural fit for more minor league baseball," Kaval said.
Players will come from junior and four-year colleges, with a small number of experienced minor and major league veterans including players from Japan and Korea rounding out the rosters.
The League is in discussions with numerous municipalities across the state about becoming charter members of the League.
"Minor league baseball is not only America's pastime but also good low cost family entertainment," Kaval said. "A family of four can see a game with mid inning promotions, giveaways, and some tasty ballpark food for under $40."
Charter cities will be announced next summer and the first pitch will be in June of 2005.
"We wanted to make sure we had at least 18 months to plan and launch the League," Kaval stressed from his offices in Menlo Park, CA. "As we have seen with the successful Atlantic and Northern Leagues, it is imperative to start out right. A long lead time makes that possible." Kaval adds, "We are going to create one of the premier independent leagues in the nation."
The Golden League will have a single entity ownership structure whereby the League owns all the teams, similar to Major League Soccer and the Central Baseball League. The centralized ownership group will provide the financial stability needed to ensure the long term success of the League.
The League has assembled an expert Advisory Council that includes Craig Landis (Sports Agent at Reich, Katz, and Landis Baseball Group), Paul Deese (Founder of the Alaskan Summer League and Former President of the National Baseball Congress), Byron Pierce (Founder and ex-President of the Central Baseball League), Burt Boltuch (ex-owner of the Modesto Athletics), and Matt Jones (GM of the River City Rascals of the Frontier League).

By Anonymous August, 2003 -- For Any Occasion, Inc., a Tampa, Florida-based promotional products distributor, has received a national concession license for Minor League Baseball. This license allows the company to sell merchandise to the more than 200 minor league baseball teams in the country for resale in team concession stands and gift shops. Team merchandise for retail can only be purchased through licensed distributors.
"The process for obtaining this license was rather complex and time-consuming," said Marc Richman, CEO of For Any Occasion, "but we feel that this license will help us diversify our business model while supporting one of the fastest growing sports markets."
Larry Bluestone, For Any Occasion’s Director of Sales and Marketing- Midwest, was instrumental in obtaining the license for the company. "Our business is sound in areas like pharmaceutical and financial industries and sports was an untapped market for us to grow."
"We pride ourselves on our creativity," says Bluestone. "We feel that the minor league teams can benefit from additional exposure with the creative ideas that we present."
For Any Occasion sells such items as bobble-head pens, crystal baseball-shaped clocks, mascot resin molded pens, and mini-racers remote control cars. To date, For Any Occasion has worked with a handful of teams, but plans for expansion at the Baseball Winter Meetings™. This trade show, attended by both minor and major league baseball teams, is a forum for baseball to meet with licensees and discuss business opportunities.
"The minor leagues are great because they are experiencing so much growth in attendance," says Richman. "In 2002, minor league baseball drew almost 40 million people to their stadiums. We’re actively seeking licenses for Major League Baseball and various other sports."
Promotional products are imprintable items, such as wearables, writing instruments, desk/office/business accessories, and recognition awards that are incorporated into a company’s marketing program. Buyers spend $17 billion dollars per year on promotional products.
